The Scottish Coaching at Work Survey 2008
Have your say in The Scottish Coaching at Work Survey and have an opportunity to win coaching, champagne or a hot air balloon flight in the Prize Draw. You don't need to have experienced coaching yourself, or use coaching in your organisation, to take part in the survey. Click here to start the survey.
Many successful people and organisations claim coaching makes the difference for them. We’d like to know how people in Scotland view coaching.
We're inviting you to tell us your own experiences or tell us about your organisation's experiences in this survey to find out:
- Who in Scotland is or is not using coaching for work or on work related topics?
- What is coaching being used for?
- What aspects of coaching work well and why?
- Scottish opinion on whether improving people's performance through coaching can help people and organisations succeed through the economic downturn.
Everyone working in Scotland is invited to take part, whether or not they use (or have ever used) coaching.
Totally confidential and easy to complete.
The survey is easy to complete on line and is totally confidential – only summary statistics will be reported. Your views are important to us so we appreciate if you take your time to complete the survey and answer as many questions as possible – it should take about 10-25 minutes.
As a "thank you" for your input, all entrants have the opportunity to enter the Prize Draw and/or receive a copy of the summary results when they become available.
Recommend colleagues and friends.
We'd like to hear from as many people as possible throughout Scotland. We are also keen to hear the views of a wide range of organisations (eg: start-up, sole traders, SME, Corporate, Public Sector, Voluntary Sector, Corporate and International organisations) from all sectors in Scotland. Please forward a link to this page to colleagues and anyone you know working in Scotland who might want to contribute (www.aeona.co.uk/survey).

Background for the survey
Coaching is an increasingly popular tool for supporting personal development. Just over six out of ten respondents in the CIPD (Chartered Institute for Professional Development) Learning and development survey 2007 (covering the UK) reported that they now use coaching in their organisations.
Manchester Consulting reported in The Manchester Review (2001) an average return on investment (ROI) of 5.7 for executive coaching services and measurable tangible impacts as well as intangible benefits. The research was based on a survey of 100 senior executives mainly from US Fortune 1000 companies. Other surveys have reported considerably higher levels of return on investment, although many organisations do not formally estimate ROI.
We don't yet know how much coaching is used for work across Scotland. How much impact is coaching having on Scottish businesses and organisations? Several recent conferences and debates addressed the growth of coaching in Scotland, including:
- The Association for Coaching conference in October 2007 on "Pioneering Corporate Coaching in Scotland" with speakers from the BBC, BT, LogicaCMG & the Association for Coaching.
- The debate in February 2008 on "Executive Coaching – a gamble or a godsend?" hosted by Edinburgh University Management School and the Academy for Executive Coaching.
- The "Growing Mentoring and Coaching in Scotland - Realising our Potential" in May 2008, co-sponsored by The University of Strathclyde, The Scottish Leadership Foundation and the Scottish Mentoring Network.
Scottish Enterprise has recognised the need for investing in people in order to develop Scotland as a centre of international excellence. This is specifically included in the strategy for developing various sectors including Life Sciences, Textiles and Tourism. The Saltire Foundation similarly recognises the need to invest in individuals who can bring international excellence to Scotland. Their new fellowships and internships intensively develop business and leadership skills and give Scottish business leaders of tomorrow the benefit of experience in some of the world's greatest companies. While most organisations across Scotland can’t afford these resources, coaching is one successful way organisations can develop future potential leaders and improve their performance today.
In addition to the aims stated above, this survey sets out to discover:
- how coaching is viewed by Scottish people and organisations;
- whether or not people take on coaching independently of their employer to address work related topics;
- what aspects of coaching have brought about results (or not); and
- how the effects of coaching have been measured (or not).
About the survey and prize draw
The survey has been designed to make it as quick as possible to complete, so that for the most part you can simply tick the boxes, plus if you choose you can add further comments. We have incorporated findings from previous papers, reports and surveys on coaching in order to do this, including: CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) reports on coaching surveys from 2004 & 2005, the Manchester Review report 2002, Sherpa Coaching report 2008, various Association for Coaching reports and conference proceedings, and peer reviewed literature from journals including the International Journal of Evidence Based Coaching and Mentoring and Coaching.
As a thank you for your time and input to the survey, all entrants can choose to receive a summary report of the survey and to be entered for the prize draw. The early bird draw on 20th December 2008 is for three hours of coaching. The main prize draw is on 25th January 2009, giving you two chances to win.
The first winner drawn in the main draw can choose one option from the following:
- Six hours of executive, business or personal coaching with Aeona – www.aeona.co.uk.
- A Freedom voucher for a champagne hot air balloon flight with Alba Ballooning – www.albaballooning.co.uk.
- a magnum of champagne.
One runner-up prize is three hours of coaching with Aeona.
